Academic writing prompts: demystifying dissertation writing

The dissertation is quite a large piece of writing and it takes quite a bit of time to complete. When you are working on a first draft for your dissertation writing project and you cannot think of what to say, it is possible that you are experiencing something known as writers block. It doesn’t matter what you age or experience level is when this happen and it could happen to anyone at any time. It can also prevent you from finishing your paper in a reasonable time.

When you feel stuck and you cannot make the words come out of your brain, you have writers block. This phenomenon can have many causes, and some of those causes are anxiety, lack of understanding, or not enough research. Here are some of the most common causes of writers block:

  • This is one of the most common causes for writers block. Understanding the assignment can be as easy as asking your teacher, professor, or instructor more detailed questions about the project. Other students can also help to provide information for you. Maybe you are not the only person who is confused about the project in general and they could use help as well. You never know until you ask.

  • It is possible that one of the main reasons that you are getting lost in your writing is because you don’t have enough research materials to do the work. If you visit a library, you will be able to find a lot more materials for your subject. This is also true if you visit some academic sites on the Internet or even run a search on Wikipedia. Try and read some of the key meanings of the things that you use for research materials. Make notes with regard to evidence or potential key ideas. Write these things in words that you think of yourself to avoid plagiarism concerns.

  • Contrary to popular belief, you can do too much research. Sometimes when you are having difficulty in writing your paper, it is because you have chosen too broad a topic and, thus, it has become easy to get lost in all of the information. Narrow the research that you have done and maybe try and assign yourself a certain number of pages to work within if you don’t already have something like that set up for yourself. Doing this will help to allow you to get rid of some of the materials that are beyond the general scope of the project.
